MOTOROLA

ALTMOTO FAMILY STUDY

From 2002 – 2005 I worked at Motorola’s Advanced Concepts Group (ACG) in Cambridge, Massachusetts — the experience was amazing. While at Motorola I had my first real experience working directly with physical prototyping and interaction designers; an experience that forever changed the way I look at the design development process.

These images, taken from across several programs, present a wide over view of the aesthetic ideas I was exploring at the time. All of these images are of mechanically functional prototypes (meaning hinges and mechanisms were all resolved to ‘near’ production tolerances).

WHY I LIKE IT:
These studies were pushing Motorola to look forward toward a flatter, simpler look and feel. While all of this were may not have made it to market, the use of the flat “M” icon and the rear housing iconography shown in some of these studies influenced several of the production programs.
