IDSA 2011 CONFERENCE

NEW ORLEANS

In December 2010 I was approached to Chair the IDSA National Conference in New Orleans. It was tremendous challenge and I couldn’t have done it without the support of TEAGUE and in particular the dedication of Sarah Matheny and Kisha Kelly.

The theme for the conference was “COMMUNITY” – a nod to the gathering momentum around ‘maker’ culture as well as to the transformative impact community delivered to the host city in the aftermath of Katrina and the BP oil spill. The conference was organized along three sub themes, each of which became the focal point for a day’s programing: ATTITUDES AND BEHAVIORS, METHODS AND MEANS, and COMMUNITY AS CONTEXT.

WHY I LIKE IT:
Mounting a national conference is a huge undertaking. Looking back, I am very proud of the speaker line-up we put together which brought together a tremendous group of thought leaders: author Clay Shirky, Kickstarter founder Yancey Strickler, Facebook’s Margaret Gould Stewart, and anthropologist Grant McCracken – among others.
